Let’s look at nine basic steps you can take to improve your website’s Google rankings.
1. Creating a sitemap is one of the easiest ways to improve your website's search rankings. This will allow Google's bots to quickly and efficiently index your entire website and ensure that no pages are missing (and can't be found through Google search). You can submit a sitemap file to Google through its webmaster website.
2. Make sure that the necessary information is provided to the robots using the robots.txt file. But basically, staying on the good side of the robots is one of the best practices to ensure that your website is highlighted in Google searches.
3. This is a no-brainer: remove duplicate content. Search engine bots hate duplication, and it’s one of the easiest ways to get your site dropped in the Google search rankings. Some webmasters think it’s a good idea to create pages designed to detect search engine bots, but this will backfire and hurt your site’s SEO rankings.
4. Although less important than in the past, it still helps to create static versions of your web pages. Search engine robots are more likely to interpret static content, at least more effectively than dynamic content.
5. Create permalinks to your pages using your keywords (for example: "/products/fridges/dynatech-coolfreezepro/"). This will result in better search rankings than permalinks that contain mostly numbers or other random information. A good rule of thumb is that the more recognizable data you can provide to robots, the better.
6. An organized website with a clear internal linking architecture will rank higher in Google. This means showing important information on the homepage and making sure to group similar content together on dedicated pages. With a menu like the one below, search engine robots can easily index your site.
7. When creating text-based content, use keywords that your audience is likely to search for. These should be used throughout your text (don’t overdo it, though) and in the title of the article and its permalink. Remember that search engine robots cannot read images or text. If your website posts contain many images, videos, or text screenshots, add titles or descriptions that robots can interpret.
8. Make sure your keywords are relevant to your business goals. If you don’t know which ones are most relevant to your field, look them up. Finding the right keywords is crucial if you want to rank high in Google searches.
9. One of the main ways that Google and other search engines rank content is by the number of sites that link to you. If your pages are frequently mentioned on other sites, your site will quickly start to move up the Google rankings. However, it’s not always that simple, and entire businesses exist to increase the number of inbound links to your site.
